Vascular surgery

Our Specialists in Vascular Diseases, Modern Angiology

Angiology deals with diseases of arteries, veins and lymph nodes. Vascular problems, such as circulatory disorders, are often attributed to concomitant diabetes (diabetes mellitus). Our leading physician, Dr. Arun Kumarasami, devotes himself intensively to this matter.

Thus, there is a very close contact with the local diabetes center.

Common Vascular Problems

Thanks to medical advances, surgeries on very small vessels of the shin can be easily performed in order to treat chronic wounds. This is especially true for patients with “diabetic foot syndrome”.

Diabetic Foot

Diabetic foot syndrome is managed jointly with our endocrinologists. To prevent amputation of the limbs, special attention is given to costly surgical interventions.

Varicose veins are a common disease with good treatment options. Foam sclerotherapy and “endovenous laser therapy” (EVLT) offer good alternatives to surgery today.

Optimal Treatment of Vascular Diseases Thanks to Interdisciplinary Cooperation

Competent detection and treatment of vascular diseases is possible only in close cooperation among different specialists. With the interdisciplinary vascular center at our Sachsenhausen Clinic in Frankfurt, we comply with the requirements: angiologists, diabetologists, vascular surgeons and cardiologists ensure interdisciplinary diagnosis, therapy and thus early detection and comprehensive treatment of vascular diseases.

Vascular Disease Emergency

Although vascular diseases are usually chronic, they can lead to acute vascular problems. This can affect arteries, lymphatic vessels and veins. Acute arterial occlusion of a blood vessel can be caused by thromboembolic disease, for example, in case of atrial fibrillation and inadequate treatment of coagulation disorders.

Severe and neglected atherosclerosis in blood vessels, for example, in diabetes mellitus and smoker’s leg, can also cause acute vascular occlusion. In these cases, there is a high risk to the patient, including the loss of a limb.

The causes of these diseases include atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus and its complications, as well as acute diagnoses such as embolisms and thrombosis.

Our department specializes mainly in the treatment of peripheral vascular diseases, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic vascular occlusion by means of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty. This is a modern technique to dilate or reopen narrowed or blocked blood vessels using a catheter intervention. This so-called keyhole intervention is the gentlest treatment of vascular diseases, with a short stay at the clinic and a quick recovery.

The range of our services of the Department of Vascular Surgery:

  • PAVK (Peripheral Vascular Disease), diagnosis and treatment, stent placement,
  • The opening of acute and chronic ceilings,
